One of the most fascinating sports in the world is that of wagering, simply because it is the type of activity that any human being can take part in, no matter what sort of person they are, as long as they have the desire. This makes it unique among past times and is probably why historians believe that it has most likely been with us since the very earliest days. Some of the oldest books in the world, including many historic religious texts, mention various forms of wagering that have gone on in cultures down through the ages. One of the very first examples of officially sanctioned wagering is thought to have been introduced into the area of Asia that is now part of China. In those days, there was a lottery type system that the empire had put in place to help raise funds for the rulers while offering the people a chance to become rich in the blink of an eye, an attractive prospect then the same way it is now. However, an actual establishment of wagering was not really developed until the 1400’s in Italy when the wealthy began to build what they knew as ‘little houses’ on their villas. The Latin word for little house is, of course, casino. This is where people would gather to sing, dance and play exciting games of chance for money. They were private affairs, but eventually Casino di Venezia was established in Venice, Italy and this is where the real business of casinos has its earliest roots. This place still stands today and tourists can actually visit it to see where casinos got their start.

The real games would get going a couple hundred years later in Monaco, the number one destination in all of Europe for those who wanted to try their hand at wagering in games of chance. This was a lot closer to the type of casino we would see today and something of a gala affair that easily attracted an international audience with its glitz and glamour. There are plenty of people still visiting Monaco today because it promises such an exquisite blend of exotic scenery and high rolling good times that are found in few other places of such huge significance. Then came Las Vegas, the big kingdom of gambling in the United States. This city built itself using the money casinos earned for the locals and it has definitely come to be something of an outstanding beacon of gaming. It was here that slot machines rose to popularity before spreading across the world and it is here that many worldwide casino developers still have their headquarters.

Getting one of the most powerful boosts ever from the mechanization of gaming that slots provided to casinos, they soon saw that they could turn table games into electronic money makers by cashing in on the online poker craze and today we have full scale casinos operating online which have the full range of games.
